United Airlines is fast-tracking the rollout of Starlink, SpaceX’s high-speed satellite internet service, across its global fleet. The airline says testing is set to begin next month, with the first commercial flight expected this spring aboard an Embraer E-175.

By the end of the year, the airline aims to outfit its entire two-cabin regional fleet with Starlink, followed closely by its mainline aircraft. Ultimately, every plane in United’s fleet will offer passengers fast, reliable, and free internet access.

This rapid deployment makes United the first major U.S. carrier to introduce complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi for its loyalty program members. “We have a lot planned for our MileagePlus members this year, and adding Starlink to as many planes as we can—as quickly as we can—is at the center of it all,” said Richard Nunn, CEO of United MileagePlus.

“It’s not only going to revolutionize the experience of flying United but also unlock tons of new partnerships and benefits for our members that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.”

Unmatched Gate-to-Gate Connectivity

Starlink, developed by SpaceX, is designed to provide consistent, low-latency internet even in the most remote areas, including over oceans and polar regions. With download speeds of up to 350 Mbps, passengers can stream movies, shop online, game, browse, and even join video calls—all without the frustrating lags and interruptions typically associated with inflight Wi-Fi.

“Everything you can do on the ground, you’ll soon be able to do onboard a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world,” said United CEO Scott Kirby at the time of the new connectivity suite’s announcement.

This gate-to-gate connectivity will allow United’s customers to connect their personal devices from the moment they board until they disembark, with support for multiple devices under a single user account.

Unlike most airlines that charge for inflight internet or limit access to premium customers, United’s service will be available free of charge to all MileagePlus members. Signing up for MileagePlus is free, making this benefit accessible to everyone.

The Largest Starlink Agreement in Aviation

United’s collaboration with SpaceX represents the largest Starlink deal in the airline industry, covering over 1,000 aircraft. It also places United in the company of other international carriers, such as Qatar Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, Air New Zealand, Air Baltic, ZIPAIR, and JSX, which have adopted the advanced satellite technology. However, United’s commitment to fleet-wide Starlink integration makes it a trailblazer among U.S. airlines.

Initially announced in September 2024, the agreement is part of United’s dedication to redefining inflight entertainment and connectivity. Starting in a few months, passengers will enjoy the same high-speed internet service in the air that they expect on the ground, both on seatback screens and personal devices.

A Competitive Edge in the Industry

As the only major U.S. airline teaming up with Starlink, United is setting a new standard for inflight connectivity. By replacing legacy providers and opting for SpaceX’s satellite technology, the airline is on its way to raising the bar for passenger expectations.

The airline’s accelerated timeline also signals its intent to stay ahead of the competition. With initial passenger flights expected this spring and full deployment slated for the end of the year, United’s customers won’t have to wait long to enjoy the perks of fast, free inflight Wi-Fi.

By joining forces with SpaceX and offering Starlink’s high-speed internet across its fleet, United is getting ready for the next era of inflight connectivity. Whether for streaming, shopping, gaming, or working, passengers can look forward to staying connected without interruption at cruising altitude.
