After 18 months of planning, United Airlines has opened the first lounge in the newly renovated Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

“We are the first airport partner lounge that has opened in this terminal,” says Laura Edwards, Senior Manager of Clubs & Lounges at United Airlines. “We will be the largest lounge [in the concourse], and we are about 15,000 square feet. Through the end of the summer, United will be the only club that customers can use to visit [while in this terminal].”

With more than 350 seating options in the lounge, visitors will have ample room to lounge, work, dine, or rest between long connections.

A hot and cold buffet with local fare, including the New Jersey state sandwich, a premium bar, and self-service beverages, are available for lounge guests. Plus, there is the first-ever wellness room for nursing parents or those looking to pray or meditate.

Last year, the airline opened a 30,000 United Club location in Concourse C. This particular lounge is United’s second lounge to open in a series of slated 2023 openings.

Later this summer, United plans to open two United Clubs at Denver International Airport. The US-based airline has plans to renovate and introduce new United Club locations throughout the airline’s network throughout the year.

Lounge Features and Design

Modern touches are available throughout the lounge, from high-speed Wi-Fi to self-scan entry gates. Two self-service kiosks can help you change your flight or seat or adjust travel information.

The new lounge features a New York and New Jersey-inspired design with a modern look. Artwork around the lounge is from local artists, including a mural from Newark-based artist Antoinette Ellis-Williams, who takes inspiration from the airport’s surroundings and connects with others.

With an open-air concept, travelers can look down into the terminal below while in the lounge. There are also gorgeous views of the nearby skyline.

“All the spaces here at Newark give nods to each other between the various concourses,” says Edwards. “We take more of a regional approach with everything from the design, which is local artists, as well as the bar and food offerings. All kinds of have that local nod to support the area that you’re in.”

“With this club being unique where it’s New Jersey meets New York from a skyline standpoint, we focused heavily on kind of bridging that together. We’re bringing in those elements and moving the footprint to where you could be anywhere in the USA, knowing the airport you’re in and that you’re flying United.”

Later in the year, a Delta Air Lines Sky Club, American Express Centurion Lounge, and American Airlines Admirals Club are expected to join the newly minted United lounge in the terminal.

According to Edwards, the United Lounge is double the space of any other airline lounge opening in the terminal. The airline officially opened doors to its new lounge this week. It’s set to open daily from 5:00 am to 9:15 pm and is near gate A27.
