What Is It Like to Visit the Brand-New Delta One Lounge in JFK?
Two days after its grand opening, Delta's brand-new lounge was already operating at full capacity
July 11, 2024
After a magnificent launch party, the one-and-only (for now) Delta One Lounge in New York JFK Airport went into full swing, operating at full capacity for the busy summer travel season. I was lucky to be on an international flight a few days after the lounge’s opening, giving me the opportunity to test the airline’s newest lounge product.
Location
The premium experience begins with a private check-in at JFK Terminal 4. Upon presenting eligible tickets, they will gain access to an expansive hallway leading to the counters.
A refreshment station awaits within this space, where attentive servers offer a selection of beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Additionally, a dedicated TSA screening room directly behind the check-in counters will provide seamless access to the Delta One Lounge in the upcoming fall season.
Access
To access the facility, only passengers flying on intercontinental and transcontinental Delta One and business class with specific partner carriers (Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic, and LATAM Airlines) are permitted.
It’s important to highlight that entry is not available to individuals with credit cards.
The Lounge
The venue spans nearly 40,000 square feet across three former lounges on two levels. On the upper floor, guests can enjoy fine and casual dining, spa treatments, and views of the busy runways from the floral sky deck.
The design theme combines Art Deco with a contemporary refresh, incorporating architectural details like suspended lighting fixtures, fluted glass panels, gold leaf ceilings, white marble counters, and bronze rails.
The space is also adorned with artwork from international artists, creating an art gallery that reflects the airline’s global reach.
The high-end ornamental elements and decorative accents showcase a partnership with Missoni, adding a touch of high fashion to the space.
Food and Beverage
At the brasserie, Delta has partnered with renowned restaurateur Danny Meyer to curate a three-course menu. Diners can indulge in a range of dishes such as hamachi crudo, steak tartare, succulent roasted halibut, premium wagyu steak, and delectable desserts like chocolate soufflé and cheesecake.
However, due to the high demand during the July 4th week and understaffing, there was a slight wait for a table. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised to secure a table for myself and a friend within 15 minutes.
For those looking for a quick bite, the market and bakery offer various tantalizing options. From classic Italian fare, including pasta and stone oven pizza, to comforting favorites like chicken cutlets and healthier choices like grain bowls, fresh salads, and gourmet sandwiches, there’s something to suit every palate. And let’s not forget the tempting display of desserts.
The grand U-shaped bar is another highlight of the brasserie. While some top-shelf spirits and cocktails may not be complimentary, a delightful self-serve juice and herb bar offers a wonderful selection of non-alcoholic beverages.
Amenities
In addition to the gender-specific restrooms, there are also accessible bathrooms and shower suites, which are probably larger than some Manhattan studios.
They are well-stocked with soft terrycloth bathrobes, slippers, and Grown Alchemist products. Outside, there is a shoeshine booth and steam-ironing service available.
Towards the back, the wellness center features massage chairs in enclosed alcoves.
Visitors can sign up for short-session treatments such as hand and arm massages and jet lag recovery on the digital kiosks, but the wait time for these treatments can be quite long.
Verdict
Once the understaffing issue is resolved, Delta One Lounge should be the landmark destination it’s destined to be — bringing back the glamor, splendor, and prestige of the golden jet age.
