How to Spend an Extra Day on Hilton Head Island

by Business Traveler

June 15, 2022

Why does this verdant, upscale resort town routinely take the top spot in popular meeting and convention destination lists in the U.S.? It’s likely because this barrier island off South Carolina’s coast isn’t large—measuring just five miles across and 12 miles long—but it’s jam-packed with sought-after amenities. In addition to its 24 golf courses, with their rolling green hills and challenging waterfront holes, Hilton Head boasts roughly 60 miles of scenic bike trails, a national wildlife refuge, more than 12 miles of uninterrupted sandy beaches, and a culinary scene that showcases two local highlights: seafood and Southern cooking.

Whether you’re planning a solo trip or taking the family or a significant other, you’ll discover abundant escapist options. Here, we spotlight a few must-see destinations.

Skull Creek Boathouse

This waterfront restaurant combines iconic views with a seafood-focused menu offering everything from Carolina catfish and peel-and-eat shrimp from local waters to artful sushi like the spicy tuna firecracker roll. The open-air setting feels casual, but Skull Creek is also a popular spot for private dinners and events.

Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes

Golf courses offer an embarrassment of riches on Hilton Head, but for its sense of history and spectacular views, book a tee time at the Robert Trent Jones Course, one of three golf experiences at Palmetto Dunes. Designed in 1970 by Jones, Sr., this par-72, 6,710-yard course features one of only two oceanfront holes on the island, the par-five 10th.

Farm

A 15-minute drive inland from Hilton Head, Farm works with small farmers, fishermen and artisanal producers to create a dining experience that’s equal parts delicious and authentic. Farm encourages guests to order multiple plates for sharing, from Lady’s Island oysters and burrata and ham to grilled tilefish, smoked pork and brown-butter corn bread.

Located within the award-winning Hilton Head Health resort, The Indigo Spa likewise has garnered accolades for its combination of lush treatments in a serene setting. Book the Indigo Custom Massage, available at 50 or 80 minutes, and enjoy a service that addresses sore muscles while offering a choice of therapeutic oils such as French lavender, apricot or warming cardamom amber.

The Inn & Club at Harbour Town

Situated within the 5,000-acre Sea Pines Resort, this boutique experience on the ninth fairway of Harbour Town Golf Links features just 60 guest rooms with beds dressed in Frette linens and covered terraces. Family-friendly activities include access to the Beach Club and Harbour Town pool, bike rentals for adults and children, boat tours to view the area’s dolphins, and pony rides for kids seven and under.
