After a record-breaking 2024 with more than 21.3 million visitors, Croatia is solidifying itself as one of Europe’s top destinations. A perfect entry point into the country is Dubrovnik, located between Mount Srđ and the shimmering blue Adriatic Sea. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s a place with a rich history, dating back to the seventh century.

Known for its romantic Old Town, pristine beaches and, in recent years, its link to HBO’s Game of Thrones, and many other movies and TV shows, it’s not dauntingly large, with easy walkability. Featuring mild temperatures, May is the perfect time to visit to discover the city’s hidden gems and main attractions. And if you’re up for visiting all the movie sets in the city, there are plenty of tours that can take you there. Sample these sights before the busy season.

Beaches

Croatia is known for its beaches, and the easiest one to get to is Banje Beach. Amenities include restaurants, bars and loungers, and at sundown it transforms into a nightclub with dancing and live music. You can also visit Sveti Jakov for a more local, often less crowded experience. Accessible by foot, about a half hour from Old Town, it offers desirable swimming and shimmering views. banjebeach.com

Restaurant 360

Dubrovnik’s seaside location makes it a great place for pescatarian delicacies. For a Michelin-starred experience, try Restaurant 360, helmed by city native Marijo Curić. Opt for the five-course tasting menu, with chef Curić putting a modern spin on Dalmatian classics such as peškafondo, fried calamari. For a nightcap, make your way to D’vino Wine Bar. 360dubrovnik.com
