Tech Glitch Leads to Major Flight Delays Monday
Software problems are quickly resolved Monday morning but cause a ripple of delays across the U.S.
Technical issues Monday morning led to groundings and flight delays on five major U.S. airlines. The airline outage came on the heels of several such problems in recent weeks stemming from computer glitches to the sudden and deliberate grounding of Boeing 737 Max jets on tarmacs across the country and the globe.
Monday’s outage was caused by a problem with an AeroData program used to calculate the weight and balance of flights, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.
System-wide outages began in the dawn hours on the east coast and affected flights on Alaska, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest and United Airlines as well as some regional carriers. Around 500 flights on Southwest alone were delayed Monday morning. The delays were experienced at airports in Chicago, New York, Boston, Atlanta, Miami and Detroit.
Although the software issues were resolved within a reasonably short time the delays involved are expected to have ripple effect across the country today.
