Norwegian, the low-cost, long-haul airline, has become the number one foreign airline serving New York in terms of passengers carried. The carrier has been in operation for only six years. It passed Air Canada, the longtime foreign leader, in passengers carried in February.
According to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, which operates the airports, Norwegian carried 2,078,847 passengers in the 12 months ending in February – surpassing its competitors on transatlantic routes. After beginning with service to Oslo and Stockholm from John F. Kennedy Airport in May 2013, the carrier has expanded to offer 11 nonstop routes to Europe from the three major airports, as well as New York Stewart International Airport. Norwegian is scheduled to launch additional US routes this summer, including New York to Athens; Chicago to Barcelona; and Boston to Rome and Madrid.
