Amtrak App Allows Riders to Book Emptier Trains

Number of reserved seats will be limited to allow for more physical distancing

Amtrak has announced a new tweak to its website and mobile app that allow riders to easily see which trains have the fewest number of seats booked. Using the app, riders see a volume percentage next to each train, allowing them to book a train that is less crowded.

The percentage is displayed in real-time when customers search for their train. The percentage shown represents the proportion of seats sold based on the total number of seats on each train. These percentage numbers adjust dynamically in real time as more passengers make reservations.

Amtrak says it is also limiting the number of reserved seats to allow for more physical distancing in seating areas. Families and friends traveling together can find seats next to each other. If traveling alone, customers may place their personal belongings on the seat next to them.

Amtrak’s COVID-19 include enhanced cleaning protocols, contactless amenities, social distancing on board and in stations, required face coverings and state-of-the-art air filtration.

As airlines continue to cut routes to smaller cities and business travel looks for ways to stay within state or work with satellite pods, train options (along with drive-to-destinations) are allowing travelers the attractive option of not getting on that full flight.
