Travel lows can bring unexpected highs, which television writer, author and producer Gary Janetti details in his new book, We Are Experiencing a Slight Delay. “Traveling is like planning a party. I prepare exactly what I want before it starts, but you have to let it be what it wants to be.” His secret to a successful trip? “Find the most fabulous hotel and use the entire property as your room.” And if delays occur? “Just tell me what’s going on. Don’t deflect and tell me the gate isn’t ready.” Here, his favorite stays.

London

“I go a lot. I love London. I saw Ian McKellan as Falstaff in Player Kings. He was brilliant. I got to see Sarah Snook in The Picture of Dorian Gray—also brilliant. Chiltern Firehouse is my favorite hotel. I’ve never stayed anywhere else since it opened. The staff is lovely and warm. It’s laid out like a house. There are always fires going and a beautiful outdoor courtyard. I want to feel like I live wherever I am even if it’s just for 24 hours.”

Paris

“Any city where you can get off the train and be in Paris is for me. Hôtel Plaza Athénée and Le Bristol are my two hotels. I’ve been going to Chez André, a traditional neighborhood Parisian bistro, since I’ve known Brad. Shortly after we met 23 years ago it was open late and we just stumbled in. We had roast chicken and pommes frites—my favorite meal. And it’s still our first meal each time we’re in Paris.”

Rio de Janeiro

“It has lush tropical rainforests that claw through the city, and the most extraordinary architecture, food, music and people. I love it. You know you’re in Rio when you’re at Hotel Fasano. The roof has 360-degree views of the city—it’s stunningly beautiful. You can walk to Polis Sucos from Ipanema beach. It’s where everyone gets their acai juices and sandwiches.”

Sydney

“Park Hyatt is the only hotel you want to stay at. It’s on the waterfront, and you can take water taxis and ferries literally right from the door. Each room has a terrace facing the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Because Sydney is so far away, every second I’m there I want to be reminded where I am. I want to know I’m in this special place, and Park Hyatt makes you feel that.”
