This month, comedian Chelsea Handler has much to celebrate: a 50th birthday and a new book, aptly titled I’ll Have What She’s Having. “I have a really good time being myself with a lot of conviction and gained self-awareness. The book is a dose of optimism.” She’s also having a good time traveling, from seaside getaways to safaris. “I love an airport lounge. American Airlines always wants me to go to the Chelsea Lounge, obviously, but the Soho Lounge is the cream of the crop.” Here, her treasured travels.

Biarritz, France

“It’s like a 1970s surfing village. My friends introduced me after a trip to San Sebastián, since they neighbor each other along the coast, but Biarrtiz is the place. If I didn’t have a home in Mallorca, I would get one here. It’s so French and sexy. The food is great, and Hôtel du Palais Biarritz is a beautiful old hotel. The water is swimmable, surfable and wraps around the coast. It’s very luxe and has this old-world charm. It’s got F. Scott Fitzgerald all over it.”

Africa

“Africa is the trip of a lifetime. I go on safari with Rex Miller, who is a terrific guide. Botswana and Kenya are the two most beautiful places I’ve ever been. If you took away the snakes I would probably live in Africa. The culture is unparalleled, and I’ve never met people who have such love on their face and kindness in their eyes. In Tanzania I saw the great migration, hippos in the Mara River and lions mating. I love animals—I could watch them all day long.”

Whistler, Canada

“I’ve been going for 15 years and just bought a ski chalet. I spend a good part of my winter in Whistler each year. When I’m there I feel like I live the life of a little villager. I’m very passionate about skiing, and Whistler has all the ingredients of European skiing. It just offers a bit more than American ski destinations. Skiing is a great family sport. You’re moving all day, having great food and in bed by eight o’clock. What could be better?”

Mallorca, Spain

“I have a house in Port de Sóller, and I can walk in my bathrobe across the street and get in the Mediterranean, which I’ve done on several occasions. I do tons of sailing and e-biking there. I grew up on Martha’s Vineyard in the summers and naively thought all islands were flat. I literally thought the definition of an island was a flat piece of land. Mallorca is vertiginous, mountainous and dramatic. I love the tapas and paella, any food that can be shared. Ca’s Patró March is the best—they have beautiful grilled fish, fried onion rings and sangria.”
