Travelers in three U.S. cities will gain new connections to Portugal next year, with TAP Air Portugal announcing the addition of three new routes to its transatlantic network.

Beginning on May 14, the Portuguese flag carrier will launch four weekly flights between Porto (OPO) and Boston (BOS). Next, starting on May 16, TAP will operate three weekly flights between Lisbon (LIS) and Los Angeles (LAX).

Finally, on June 3, the airline will add a stopover at Lajes Airport on the island of Terceira on its weekly service between Lisbon and San Francisco (SFO), giving passengers the chance to explore the lush, unspoiled archipelago of the Azores.

Stopover in the mid-Atlantic

To make the most of the experience in Terceira, travelers can use the airline’s stopover program, which allows them to spend up to ten days in a layover location before heading to their final destination at no additional airfare.

Nestled along the southern coast of Pico Island in the heart of the Azores, Lajes do Pico is a picturesque town that combines history, adventure, and nature. Passengers can stroll through the town’s cobblestone streets, where 17th and 18th-century architecture whispers tales of its rich past.

Other local attractions are the Ermida de São Pedro, Pico’s first church, with its striking black lava stone and white trim, epitomizing the island’s unique aesthetic.

For a dose of maritime adventures, whale-watching expeditions are also common in Lajes—the best in the Azores—guided by seasoned spotters who use cliffside lookouts to track over 20 species, including the iconic sperm whale.

To Boston on the A321LR

TAP will operate its new Porto-Boston service with its Airbus A321LR, whereas the longer flights to the U.S. West Coast will be operated with the wide-body A330neo.

These additional services will add to TAP’s existing transatlantic network, which includes flights from Lisbon to Boston, Chicago (ORD), Miami (MIA), Newark (EWR), New York (JFK), San Francisco, and Washington Dulles (IAD), as well as from Porto to Newark.”

Carlos Antunes, TAP’s Director for the Americas, added, “We’re tremendously excited to announce new service from Logan to Porto, LAX to Lisbon, and SFO to the Azores. Los Angeles will become TAP’s eighth U.S. gateway. And, of course, all three new routes include our popular Portugal Stopover program where you can enjoy up to 10 days in Portugal enroute to any of our destinations in Europe, or on the way home, for no additional airfare.”
