Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) has recently opened its cutting-edge concourses D and E, just in time for one of the busiest celebratory periods in the region, Eid.
Arguably renowned for its top-notch amenities and modern interiors, Hamad is a major global aviation network hub. However, it often finds itself overshadowed by larger airports like Dubai and Istanbul, which can accommodate more than double the traffic.
A Global Hub with Growing Demand
As the home base for Qatar Airways, which is keen on expanding its reach further, the airport has been operating close to full capacity. Many passengers have had to rely on remote stands and buses to get between gates, a situation that the new concourses aim to improve.

While these additions won’t entirely eliminate the need for bus transfers, they significantly reduce the inconvenience associated with them.
Expanding with Efficiency
Concourses E and D now offer a combined terminal space of 51,000 square meters, featuring 17 new aircraft ‘contact’ gates—a 40 percent increase compared to last year. This expansion allows the terminal to handle an additional 13 million passengers annually without needing buses, cutting down nearly 1,000 bus journeys daily and contributing positively to sustainability efforts.

Located on either side of the Orchard, these two new wings of the main terminal are easily accessible by train, buggy rides, or a quick five-minute walk, reminiscent of Hong Kong International Airport’s layout. Moreover, the design shifts the airport’s central activity northward to the orchard complex, moving away from the southern zone that has historically experienced the highest foot traffic.
Sustainability and Smart Design
The terminal’s footprint has only increased by an additional 14 percent, demonstrating the efficiency of its design while accommodating more gates.

When asked about the potential for completely eliminating bus transfers, officials at HIA acknowledged that while this may not entirely be possible, Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer emphasized that this represents just the beginning of an ongoing expansion.

“Hamad International Airport serves as more than just a gateway; it is a crucial pillar of Qatar’s growth and global connectivity. I take great pride in the completion of this expansion project, which I have been involved with since 2018,” he said.
“While many airport expansions worldwide have been delayed, we are thrilled to have delivered this significant development ahead of schedule.”

According to the Group CEO, “this is not merely about increasing capacity; it’s about bolstering the entire Qatar Airways network, enhancing operational resilience, and supporting Qatar’s economic growth in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. This expansion enables us to meet the evolving demands of global travel while solidifying Qatar’s role as a leading aviation hub.”
Advanced Technology
The new concourses also incorporate advanced technology, featuring self-boarding gates and smart systems that streamline gate procedures such as quick document verification.

They also ensure accessibility with features like hearing loops, barrier-free pathways, and spacious seating areas complete with power outlets at every seat.
Enhanced Retail and Dining Options
Further enhancing the terminal’s already impressive luxury shopping options, Qatar Duty-Free has introduced over nine new retail outlets and food and beverage venues, expanding the airport’s retail space by an additional 2,700 square meters.

With these enhancements now in place, travelers can expect a smoother and more enjoyable experience at one of the Middle East’s smaller yet technologically advanced and luxurious airports.
