Lufthansa Group member Austrian Airlines has announced it will launch nonstop flights between Vienna and Boston this summer, the first-ever direct service between the two cities.

Beginning on July 1, the Austrian flag carrier will launch a new year-round route between Vienna International Airport (VIE) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).

Austrian Airlines will launch the route with its Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. The plane has a total capacity of 211 passengers, including 24 lie-flat Business Class seats, 30 Premium Economy seats, and 157 Economy Class seats.

Passengers in Business Class will have the luxury of almost 6.5-foot-long fully-reclinable seats and be offered traditional Austrian cuisine and hospitality.

The Austrian Airlines Flying Chef program features a professional chef on board who prepares both regional and international delicacies that can be paired with matching wines recommended by a trained sommelier. Moreover, Premium guests can choose from up to 10 Viennese coffees, courtesy of premium coffee retailer Julius Meinl.

Once launched, the new route will be the only nonstop service between Boston and Vienna. However, Austrian Airlines will add to the presence of Lufthansa Group members Lufthansa and SWISS at Boston Logan, which operate nonstop services to Frankfurt (FRA) and Zurich (ZRH), respectively.

“The U.S. market is integral to our success, and we’re excited that 2024 will bring all three of Lufthansa Group’s main hub airlines to Boston Logan with the launch of Austrian Airlines’ new service to Vienna in July,” said Dirk Janzen, Vice President of Passenger Sales for The Americas at Lufthansa Group Airlines.

“Austrian Airlines is the only airline in the world to provide a personalized service that conveys that special ‘Austrian touch.’ Bostonians will soon be able to experience Austrian’s premium onboard products, high-end culinary options, and the warm, friendly hospitality for which Austria is known.”

The new route will also take Austrian’s total number of destinations outside of Europe to 19. At the same time, the carrier said it is offering flights to over 125 destinations across the globe in 2024.

In July, the airline will offer up to 45 weekly flights to seven destinations in North America: Boston, Newark, JFK, Washington Dulles, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles, and Montreal.

Michael Trestl, Chief Communications Officer at Austrian Airlines, expressed his excitement at what the new service will offer to passengers on both sides of the Atlantic.

“We are excited to announce Boston as a new and highly attractive destination,” said Trestl. “This expansion enhances our long-haul offering and strengthens the Vienna hub. Boston’s world-renowned universities, including Harvard and MIT, business connections, and the city’s unparalleled charm make it a fascinating and enticing travel destination. Additionally, it will be even easier for visitors and tourists from New England to come to Vienna in the future.”

The flights departing from Vienna are scheduled to leave at 10:40 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and every other Tuesday. These flights will arrive in Boston at 1:50 PM. The return flights will depart from Boston at 5:10 PM and will land back in Vienna at 7:25 AM the following day.
