Honeywell ThermoRebellion system uses artificial intelligence to monitor passengers’ temperatures
November 25, 2020
New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport has installed thermal imaging monitors at each of the entrances to its International Terminal One. The Honeywell ThermoRebellion system combines thermal imaging and artificial intelligence to detect elevated skin temperatures.
As individuals pass in front of the high-resolution, thermal imaging camera, skin temperature is detected within seconds and displayed on an accompanying monitor, alerting airport personnel if travelers require additional screening.
A similar thermal imaging system has been deployed at Los Angeles International Airport since June. At LAX, thermal cameras screen both arriving and departing passengers at two locations inside the Tom Bradley International Terminal –– at the main entrance on the departures level and inside the terminal near select international arrivals.
The system was designed and tested to meet Food and Drug Administration recommendations issued in April 2020 to address the use of thermal imaging systems during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sensing systems were developed in partnership with Dubai National Air Transport Association (DNATA), an air services company providing ground handling, cargo, travel and flight catering services.
Honeywell ThermoRebellion incorporates technology from Rebellion Photonics, which Honeywell Safety and Productivity Solutions division acquired in 2019.
