Air Canada Suspends New York, Boston and Washington, DC, Services
The cuts, which will be in effect until at least April 30, are in response to more Canadian government travel restrictions
Air Canada has announced it is suspending flights between Toronto and three US airports, New York LaGuardia, Boston Logan and Washington Reagan National. The cuts are part of a 17-route reduction across the system that come as a result of changing travel restrictions by the Canadian government.
Service to Boston from Toronto will be suspended on Feb. 16 while suspensions to Washington and New York take effect the following day. The airline says the suspensions will last until at least April 30.
Eliminating these flights means there will be no nonstop service between Toronto and the Washington area. In the New York area the airline will continue flights to Newark Liberty International Airport.
Travel between the US and Canada has been open only to essential travel and to dual nationals or returning residents since last spring.
Beginning Feb. 8, Air Canada has also put all flights of its low-cost subsidiary Rouge on hiatus indefinitely. The move comes as the Canadian government rolls out new travel rules that force travelers to scale back non-essential trips even more.
The rules curtail operations to destinations in the Caribbean, an area Air Canada serves mostly aboard Rouge flights.
The airline said customers affected by the route cancellations will be contacted with options.
