Corendon Airlines Tests Child-Free Zones on Flights to Curacao

Corendon Airlines is testing “Only Adult Zones” on flights from Amsterdam to Curaçao to offer passengers a quiet environment during long-haul flights.

The Only Adult Zone on the airline’s Airbus A350-900 will be located at the front of the plane, separated by walls and a curtain from the rest of the cabin. The zone has 102 seats, with 93 standard seats and nine seats offering extra legroom.

If sitting next to small children on a flight is not your cup of tea, you can opt for the child-free zone by paying an extra fee of €45 each way. Additionally, if you prefer more legroom, you can choose one of the nine seats with extra space by paying an additional fee of €100 each way.

We all know how hectic it can be to navigate through a busy airport, going through various checkpoints while eagerly anticipating the flight ahead. However, this excitement can quickly turn to frustration when you are seated next to a crying child with a 10+ hour flight ahead of you. Corendon recognizes this issue and has created a “shielded environment” that promotes a calm and relaxed flight for everyone onboard.

The aim is for all parties to have a smoother traveling experience, with those in the child-free area assured of the quiet they require to relax and anxious parents not needing to worry about their children disturbing childless flyers.

“On board our flights, we always strive to respond to the different needs of our customers. We are also the first Dutch airline to introduce the Only Adult zone because we are trying to appeal to travelers looking for some extra peace of mind during their flight,” said Atilay Uslu, chairman and founder of Corendon.

“We also believe this can have a positive effect on parents traveling with small children. They can enjoy the flight without worrying if their children make more noise.”

Not the first airline with adults-only options

Corendon is not the first airline carrier to offer child-free seating. Low-cost Singaporean airline Scoot allows customers to ‘ScootInSilence’ between its Business and Economy offerings.

Likewise, AirAsia X has had a specified quiet zone on long-haul flights for passengers aged 12 or over since 2013. Indian airline IndiGo, has two areas on its flights where children under 12 are prohibited.

Nonetheless, Corendon is the first European airline to trial a child-free zone. If considered a success on the Amsterdam – Curacao route, the airline should extend the initiative to other routes.

According to a poll by Newsweek of 1,500 American adults, roughly 60% favored introducing adult-only zones on public transport. With numbers like that, we may see many more child-free seating areas across long-haul routes.

Airbus A350 Partnership
