La Casa del Ron Guatemala: A Heavenly Airport Lounge for Rum Lovers

For years, travelers passing through Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport have lamented the terminal’s outdated facilities and lack of charm. However, the Casa del Ron Aeropuerto lounge emerges as an oasis, offering a sophisticated retreat with an exceptional culinary and cocktail experience that pays homage to Guatemala’s rich heritage.

Situated by Gate 6 adjacent to the terminal’s food court, Casa del Ron is housed within the Zacapa Rum store.

This unique setting showcases one of the world’s most celebrated rum brands alongside other local labels, lending an unmistakable sense of place.

Access is seamless for Priority Pass holders, LoungeKey members, Diners Club cardholders, and passengers flying Business Class with Iberia.

The Lounge

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a stunning staircase lined with historic Zacapa rum bottles, setting the tone for the lounge’s aesthetic. The entrance features rows of wooden rum barrels and a glowing backlit Zacapa logo.

Spanning 6,700 square feet, the lounge is divided into three distinct areas. A sleek restaurant-style section features a striking triangular table surrounded by high chairs, with a centerpiece display of Zacapa’s finest labels. Here, attentive hosts guide patrons to their tables for an à la carte dining experience.

The second area is cozier, with a mix of plush couches, tables, and walls adorned with photos detailing Zacapa’s rum production process. The third section is a streamlined runway area with work-friendly stations equipped with charging ports, ideal for business travelers. With a capacity of 170 seats, the lounge ensures a comfortable experience for its guests.

Food and Beverage

The lounge’s pièce de résistance is its remarkable food and drink offering, combining complimentary options with premium upgrades, delivering a gastronomic experience that rivals top-tier restaurants.

As a self-professed Zacapa enthusiast, I tried two signature cocktails. First came the Zacapa Express, a cold-brew coffee cocktail blended with rum, sugar syrup, and 70 percent cocoa, served in a martini glass. This cocktail offered a remarkably smooth and indulgent start.

Later on, I tried the Zacapa Sour, a refreshing concoction of rum, sugar syrup, orange liqueur, and lemon juice garnished with orange zest, providing the ideal midday pick-me-up.

Both were masterfully crafted, with the Zacapa Sour emerging as my favorite. The bar also features creations spotlighting Guatemala’s other premium rum, Botran, alongside the country’s top gin brand, Xibal, and classic cocktails.

For lunch, I chose the cochinita pibil tacos, a standout dish featuring tender, slow-cooked pork served on house-made corn tortillas, complemented by avocado sauce and pickled onions.

Quite simply, they were among the best tacos I’ve ever had. Other tempting options from the extensive menu included a tenderloin panini, carpaccio focaccia, and a spinach and quinoa salad for lighter appetites.

Amenities

While compact, the lounge offers essential amenities, including complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and clean restrooms. However, it lacks shower facilities.

Best For

Enjoying a full preflight meal and premium beverages, especially before U.S.-bound flights, which are often treated as regional routes by American carriers operating at La Aurora.
