Marriott Plans 100 Asia Pacific Hotel Openings in 2021

The hotel giant already has more than 800 properties in the region, says it will continue to strengthen its luxury portfolio

January 21, 2021

Marriott International has announced plans to open an additional 100 properties in Asia-Pacific during 2021. Last year, the hotel group added 75 properties to its portfolio in the region, including the debut of its 800th hotel in the area.

In the midst of economic challenges, Greater China is leading the global recovery. In an announcement, Marriott cited a joint report by Bain & Co. and Alibaba’s Tmall Luxury unit, saying mainland China is set to becoming the world’s largest personal luxury market by 2025, posting year-over-year domestic growth in 2020 despite the pandemic.

To leverage this trend, Marriott says it will continue to strengthen its luxury portfolio with expected openings in 2021, with the debut of the JW Marriott Shanghai Fengxian in the spring. This is the company’s 50th hotel in Shanghai and its 400th hotel in Greater China.

Other openings planned for the year include W Changsha, W Xiamen, St. Regis Qingdao and The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Jiuzhaigou. With the anticipated opening of the Ritz-Carlton Reserve, China will be the first country in Asia-Pacific to offer all of Marriott’s luxury brands.
