Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines will suspend 37 routes from its network in January 2023, citing severe supply chain woes. The Miami-based airline will be scrapping the routes from its schedule starting next year, with Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Miami, Fort Myers, and Tampa as some of its most affected locations.

The airline’s CEO, Ted Christie, says Spirit is facing “supply chain-related issues on aircraft deliveries and supply chain-related issues on engine manufacturing and engine overhaul, which is forcing us to take aircraft out of service.”

Christie adds that, because of these shortages, the airline is “losing active airplanes, which is the primary driver of the reduction in [capacity].”

The airline operates a fleet of 187 aircraft, including 31 Airbus A319, 126 A320, and 30 A321 aircraft. Spirit operates a mix of A320ceo and neo jets, averaging 7.2 years of age.

Spirit has released its reduced flight schedule, which should remain in place until May 2023. However, the airline notes this suspension should be temporary, hoping to resume its regular schedule by the busy summer season.
