Hotel Check: Williamsburg Lodge Autograph Collection Williamsburg, VA

Nestled in a picturesque historic setting, this updated property is both business-appropriate and family-friendly

WHERE IS IT? Close to Colonial Williamsburg’s historic sites and just over 20 minutes from Newport News/Williamsburg airport, this Autograph Collection member from Marriott is ideal for both vacationing families and corporate groups. A free shuttle takes guests to Busch Gardens and other nearby attractions on a set schedule for those without a car.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? Divided among several historic buildings midst beautiful gardens, Williamsburg Lodge blends into its surroundings. The main lodge houses reception as well as several dining options and function space. Like the rest of the property, the lobby shows a fresh and contemporary look that was part of a recent, multi-million-dollar renovation. Beyond reception, guests can follow the well-marked paths around the tree-shrouded grounds to explore the numerous dining options, pools and spa area. Parking, wireless Internet and the use of the eight tennis courts and pools are complimentary for guests.

ROOM FACILITIES Modern furnishings and pastel colors greet guests in the reworked rooms, which have two-poster beds, thick duvets with an accent throw and regionally inspired art. Large flat-screen TVs face the bed, and work desks cater to those here on business. Power and USB outlets are convenient both by the bed and at the desk. Bathrooms are bright with excellent lighting, including behind the enormous mirrors, and come with glass shower stalls stocking the hotel’s spa-branded toiletries from eco-friendly pump bottles. Since families frequent the hotel regularly, sofa beds are in many rooms for added convenience.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS There are all kinds of dining options around Colonial Williamsburg, which actually encompasses five hotel properties including historic colonial houses. Dining options at Williamsburg Lodge include a grab-and-go cafe near the lobby, mid-Atlantic cuisine like shrimp and grits for breakfast and lunch at Traditions, a bistro at the golf club and a tasty bar menu with burgers and salads.

LEISURE FACILITIES The resort has two outdoor pools, one reserved for adults as a quiet pool and another a family-friendly option with a regular schedule of exercise classes. The impressive spa boasts a number of treatment rooms including a special gentleman’s menu of services. In the gym, guests (and local members) find the latest workout equipment plus space for guided classes, personal trainer workouts and an indoor pool and whirlpool. The golf course adjacent to the hotel is another big draw and popular when conference visitors take a break from their meetings.

BUSINESS AND MEETING FACILITIES Free wireless Internet for Marriott Bonvoy members and 45,000 square feet of conference facilities are available. Among the options are boardroom and breakout room setups, traditional ballrooms and outdoor lawns and patios popular with evening receptions or social functions like weddings.

VERDICT A modern, points-earning oasis in the middle of one of the country’s most historic destinations.
